What's happening in the classrooms
In our last publication, the KIS-Jeju ELL team mentioned that we were working on the implementation of having two teachers in a classroom to help support each and every student. This week, we will discuss how our ELL teacher helps in the classroom.
For the last few weeks, our homeroom teachers and our ELL teachers have been working hard. They have tested the students using MAP and F&P. The ELL team collects the data points and looks for areas that your child might need help in. During Reading and Writing Workshop your child will meet with both their classroom teacher and the ELL teacher. Both teachers will be giving your child a goal. This goal is based on the educational needs of each individual student. Using this method, KIS-Jeju teachers are ensuring that your child is receiving the best education possible because we are tailoring the education to each child's needs.
What can you do at home to help your child?
Many of our parents ask us how they can help their child learn English in a more accelerated manner. So, with this in mind, our team put together a list of things you can do at home to help this process. However, please make sure you do not force your child to work too many hours after school as this actually does not help children learn the language faster. Some children react to having too many hours of schooling in the opposite manner. They actually stop learning and close off due to the stress. Stress is a huge area of concern and we must help each other ensure that your child isn't falling victim of stress. Also, keep in mind that the younger the child is, the more they need to play so their brain and body can continue developing properly. As you look at the list, please make sure you pick only ONE task a day so that you do not overwhelm your child. Here's the list of recommendations:
1. Read out loud
Grade K to 1st for 15 minutes
Grade 2 and 3 for 20 or 30 minutes
Grade 4 and 5 for 30 minutes to 45 minutes
2. Ask your child to translate something from English to Korean. Follow the same time limit set above.
3. Talk about a book they enjoy and have them explain the story to you.
4. Go to one of our recommended applications and pick one to work on at home.
